Test Method.

Summary of the test method

• It is not a simple method of simply measuring speed and sinkrate. One of the reasons being: Too large error margins in speed sensors.
• A side-by-side procedure is used, a well-established in the glider world. A number of precautions is taken to avoid systematic errors: Use of a reference wing, two pilots of the same weight (using balast), the pilots switch wings a number of times and do their test-flights in "dead" air before or shortly after sunrise, both pilots use the same harness.
• An Aircotec XC-trainer systems samples at each second. The L/D is established based on "the average of the altitude difference after the glides, the distance travelled and the known L/D of the reference wing".

Notes

• Error is +/- 0.1, but only valid for non-turbulent air.
• "Real world" performance is highly dependent on how much a wing's performance is degraded by turbulence induced pitch and roll movements. This can lead to very significant differences between wings with the same non-turbulent L/D.
• Also measured: min/trim/max speed and brake-force as a function of brake-travel.
