Radio Holder Screw
by Jérôme Daoust, revised 2022/1/27-c
The original screw (x2) intended to hold a belt clip (thin metal base), for radio models BF-F8HP, UV-5R and maybe also UV-B5 (obsolete model, has about 1 mm wider screw spacing):
· Round Pan Head, Phillips, M2.5-0.45 x 8 (Machine type, 2.5 mm diameter, 0.45 mm pitch, 8 mm length).
Supplier recommendation:
· Guard4U 300Pcs Metric M2.5 Stainless Steel Phillips Pan Head Machine Screws Nuts Assortment Kit. Amazon link.
My setup:
· Goals achieved:
o Radio with large battery capacity and choice of Tx power: BF-F8HP (2100 mAh, 7.4 V, Tx at 1/4/8 W).
o Radio on top of flight deck surface:
§ Stays in place during battery removal/install (for charging), avoiding flexing the antenna connections.
§ Easy access and view in flight of the volume knob, PPT button and keypad.
§ Protected when flight deck lid is closed (when not flying).
§ Secure: Radio held by 2 screws, bracket held by 2 cable ties, antenna flexible cable acts as an extra tether.
o Antenna is vertical, for better transmission. Antenna inside lower flight deck prevents external bending forces or poking.
· Screw length used: 10 mm length, instead of the original 8 mm, for holding the thicker plate.
· Pictures (2021/12/25) of U-plate holder I made:
o Dimensions and Iso view.
o Over the deck (antenna connector improved since: Picture, 2022/1/12). Held by cable ties: 40 lb strength. 1/8" wide, 5" long.
o Under the deck (cable end changed to a 90° angle: Picture, 2022/1/12). Showing 4x ends of cable ties, with plastic washers to distribute the pulling load.
